The Challenge

Strokes are a life-threatening condition that happens when your brain experiences a sudden interruption of blood flow, causing it to stop working and eventually damaging brain cells. In Aotearoa New Zealand, over 10,000 strokes are experienced to varying degrees every year – that’s more than 27 every day – but 80 per cent of strokes can be prevented.

The Solution

PreventS-MDTM is a web-based software application designed for clinicians to use it in conjunction with their existing electronic patient management system of outpatient clinics and hospitals. Running “behind-the-scenes” of each appointment, PreventS-MD allows automatic pre-population of information on stroke risk factors to calculate an absolute and relative five-year risk of stroke assessment and generate patient-tailored recommendations for primary and secondar stroke prevention for the individual.

Built on the award-winning Stroke Riskometer algorithm, the PreventS-MDTM software comprise of two digital tools that are complementary to each other and used in tandom – Healthcare Professionals use the PreventS-MD webapp on their office computers and/or portable devices while laypersons and community worker utilise the Stroke Riskometer mobile app on their smartphones and portable devices.

The Investment

The development and early-stage commercialisation of PreventS-MDTM has been supported by funding from AUT Ventures, KiwiNet, and receiving the Prime Minister’s Science Award in 2022. The PreventS-MDTM team are seeking further investment and global licensing partners.
