PreventS-MD Goes Global
Algorithms and software created from AUT research could now be used by over 600 million users in 27 countries thanks to recent intellectual property licencing agreements with healthcare tech giants.
Following the National Institute for Stroke and Applied Neurosciences (NISAN)'s win of the 2022 Prime Minister’s Science Award and the successful spinout from AUT Ventures in 2023, the PreventS-MD team has been diligently advancing its journey towards commercialisation. Recently, they achieved a significant milestone by licensing the PreventS-MD intellectual property to OMRON Healthcare Asia Pacific and MedTech Global Limited.
This licensing agreement has enabled the integration of the PreventS-MD software by clinicians in 27 countries, including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. This momentum is expected to grow further as more countries join the initiative, particularly with their recent inclusion in the World Health Organization's commission for digital healthcare and an upcoming presentation at the World Stroke Congress in Abu Dhabi.
Dr. Bala Nair, CEO of PreventS-MD, is optimistic about the future. With plans underway for integration by eight major software companies and their mobile app, Stroke Riskometer, already making a positive impact with over 5 million users worldwide, the journey toward understanding stroke prevention and promoting physical health is progressing steadily.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Professor Mark Orams, is impressed with the evolution of PreventS-MD from AUT research to real-world application stating, “This is another example of how we’re leading the way with innovative research that leads to important real-world impact that goes far beyond the AUT community.”
“What Bala and the team have accomplished with PreventS-MD is inspiring and will hopefully spark even more curiosity into how commercialisation can be applied to the incredible work our researchers are doing.”
PreventS-MD is a web-based app for clinicians to assess their patients’ stroke risk and provide tailored interventions. Former AUT Ventures Chief Executive, Steve Corbett, remains an actively involved director of PreventS-MD and committed mentor to Bala while the current AUT Ventures team are delighted to recognise the significant real-world impact this research has achieved to date.
