New Help for AUT Researchers to Navigate Evolving Expectations

The recently released Science System Advisory Group (SSAG) Report makes it clear that New Zealand researchers will be increasingly encouraged to translate their work into real-world impact.

There’s good news, and even better news.

The good news: our strategy Te Kete highlights impact as a key part of AUT’s vision, mission, and aspirations to 2030, so the shift towards strengthening our commercial and community impact through science and research has already begun.

The even better news: AUT and AUT Ventures will continue to support staff to adapt to any new expectations.

“The innovation landscape is shifting, and we’re evolving with it. The Ventures team remain committed to equipping AUT researchers with the tools, funding, and support they need to create real-world impact. Alongside our established services, we’ll be launching exciting new initiatives to help researchers embrace these opportunities and challenges.” says Michael Fielding, Chief Executive of AUT Ventures.

Emerging Innovator Programme: Inspiring and Nurturing Kiwi Scientists

Explore ideas

The Emerging Innovator Programme accelerates entrepreneurially minded innovators to find commercial success through targeted support, funding and mentorship from KiwiNet. With three intakes each year in February, May, and September, potential Innovators are nominated by AUT Ventures and invited to deliver a five-minute pitch to the Investment Committee.

AUT has a history of having strong representation in the programme with previous Emerging Innovators including Dr Debbie Bean, Dr Mujtaba Alshakhouri, Dr Andres Tiban, and Dr Lari Dkhar. We’re thrilled that the first cohort for 2025 includes Sara Bayandor – a PhD student in the School of Future Environments – and Dr Wei-an Chen – a School of Future Environments lecturer.

Drop-in Clinics: Where Conversations Spark Opportunities

AUT Ventures has reactivated the Drop-in Clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Employability Lab on the City Campus, because sometimes, all it takes to move an idea forward is the right conversation. The Clinics offer an informal space where AUT students and staff can discuss their business ideas, big or small.

Staff can also contact AUT Ventures at ventures@aut.ac.nz to arrange a time to discuss ideas.

Beyond the Basics: A Network of Support

Alongside these key initiatives, there are a range of resources available to support innovation and entrepreneurship:

  • Intellectual Property Guidance: Helping researchers and creators protect and manage their ideas effectively.
  • Funding Support: Assisting with identifying and securing grants or investment to bring projects to life.
  • Commercialisation Advice: Providing insights into licensing, startup pathways, and industry connections.
  • Entrepreneurial Skills Development: Offering workshops and training in pitching, business development, and market strategies.

These initiatives aren’t just about fostering new ideas—they’re about creating long-term impact. Whether you’re a student with a side hustle, a researcher with a breakthrough discovery, or someone with a bold idea waiting to be explored, AUT’s innovation ecosystem is here to support you every step of the way.

After all, transformation happens when ideas turn into action.
